Work Detail Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director of the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA), moderated a high-profile panel discussion on “Green Connections: The Indian Diaspora’s Contributions to Sustainable Development” during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention. The session, chaired by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, emphasized the pivotal role of the Indian diaspora in advancing global sustainability goals. In his keynote address, Shri Vaishnaw highlighted India’s leadership in renewable energy, focusing on three key priorities: Achieving 50% renewable energy capacity in the national energy mix by 2030. Developing self-reliance in advanced clean energy technologies such as hydrogen-powered trains. Strengthening capabilities in green hydrogen production, photovoltaic cell manufacturing, and lithium-ion battery development. Diverse Global Perspectives The panel featured prominent policymakers and business leaders from countries including Mauritius, Norway, Mexico, Vietnam, Switzerland, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Canada. Distinguished Indian representatives included Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, and Shri Sujeet Kumar, Member of Parliament. Discussions centered on leveraging the Indian diaspora’s expertise in innovation, investment, and international collaboration to foster holistic sustainable development. India’s Green Transition Leadership CMD of IREDA, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, showcased India’s progress in the green energy transition, citing an installed renewable energy capacity of 206 GW as of November 2024, with a target of 500 GW from non-fossil sources by 2030. He underscored IREDA’s role as India’s largest green financing institution, managing an asset base of ?69,000 crore ($8.3 billion) and cumulative sanctions of ?2.39 lakh crore. “IREDA’s commitment to best-in-class corporate governance and its leadership in green financing highlights our dedication to driving India’s renewable energy goals,” Shri Das said. Key Themes and Insights During the panel, discussions covered diaspora-driven investment in sustainable innovations, future green technologies across various sectors, and opportunities for global collaboration. Shri Das emphasized the potential for partnerships between the diaspora and Indian startups to accelerate the sustainable development agenda.
