Work Detail | Akamai Technologies, a global leader in content delivery network services, is boosting its market presence in Thailand to capitalise on soaring demand for mobile data and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks. A content delivery network (CDN) is a globally distributed network of proxy servers deployed in multiple data centres. The CDN is designed to serve content to end-users with strong availability and performance. Using specialised and geographically dispersed servers, the CDN will accelerate delivery by caching content in multiple locations and fulfilling requests for content using the closest server. "We see high demand for CDN service in Thailand, thanks to excessive internet bandwidth consumption, the proliferation of internet users, the popularity of video-streaming services and the challenge of cyberattacks in Thailand," said Richard Clement, country manager for Thailand at Akamai Technologies. Akamai late last year set up a local management team to increase its market presence. Mr Clement said the CDN service enables internet service providers, mobile operators, content providers, academics and state agencies to provide reliable network service with faster speeds and higher security. Thailand has more than 6.4 million fixed-line broadband internet subscribers, plus 44.6 million mobile internet users. Up to 86% of Thais use the internet every day, spending an average of 2.52 hours daily on social media. Mr Clement said Thailand's e-commerce market was valued US$25 billion in 2015, representing 6% of the country's GDP. Akamai has 1,900 servers located in Thailand through 22 internet service providers, out of 216,000 servers across 120 countries. Akamai's CDN service covers web performance optimisation, media delivery and security service. Mr Clement said the company is focusing on enterprise customers, particularly in the media and entertainment sectors. |
