The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has announced the 33 shortlisted bidders for its highly anticipated 2GW/8GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) tender. The tender, structured under a build-own-operate model, has garnered interest from prominent global players, including Masdar, ACWA Power, and Jinko Power. Additionally, French energy giants EDF and TotalEnergies are among the shortlisted contenders, alongside major companies from China, South Korea, and Japan, such as Samsung, China Energy Overseas Investment Company, China Power Engineering Consulting Group International Engineering, and China Southern Power Grid International. Out of the 33 companies, 21 have applied to provide both BESS technology and facilities management services, while the remaining 12 are vying for asset management roles. The tender encompasses four 500 MW/2,000 MWh BESS projects located in Saudi Arabia. The winning bidders will secure 15-year storage service contracts with SPPC and retain full ownership stakes in their respective projects through special purpose vehicles (SPVs). The first phase of Saudi Arabia’s ambitious battery storage initiative will support the nation’s goal of achieving 50% renewable energy by 2030. Each 500 MW installation will operate for four hours, providing a total capacity of 2,000 MWh. The projects will be based in the following locations: 500 MW / 4H Al-Muwyah BESS – Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia 500 MW / 4H Haden BESS – Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia 500 MW / 4H Al-Khushaybi BESS – Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia 500 MW / 4H Al-Kahafa BESS – Hail Province, Saudi Arabia This marks a significant step in Saudi Arabia’s renewable energy transformation and its efforts to integrate large-scale energy storage solutions. |
