Work Detail The planned electricity cuts are expected to last for at least two weeks Several parts of Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, are to be without electricity for at least seven hours a day for the next two weeks as roadworks necessitate a bout of loadshedding. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said this was due to “the Federal Capital Development Agency’s (FCDA) road dualisation project along the Apo axis, eight number 132kV and 33kV towers will be relocated along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line (Outer Southern Expressway route).” This relocation work will necessitate a planned power outage from Monday, 6 January to Monday, 20 January, from 9am to 4pm daily, said TCN. Electricity rationing across Abuja This is the estimated duration for the dismantling and construction of the towers as well as restringing of the power cables that would enable resumption of bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from Gwagwalada Substation. “Consequently, there will be a rationing of electricity supply for AEDC’s customers in Kubwa, Karu, Maraba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic. This will also affect parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika and Alaita axis,” said TCN. While the relocation of the transmission towers is a necessity for the road completion project, TCN apologised “for the inconvenience this planned power outage will cause and assures that power supply will be restored as soon as the towers relocation and cable stringing are completed.” The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed that many parts of the Nigerian capital would be without electricity for 16 days. The AEDC provided a more detailed list of the areas, businesses and institutions it says will experience loadshedding over the next few weeks. They include: Lugbe, Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, American International School, Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC HQ, Coca Cola, Railway, FMC, parts of Apo, Gudu, Kubwa, Jahi, Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Keffi, Gbazango and other parts of Abuja. “We are working around the clock to reduce downtime as much as possible and sincerely regret any inconvenience caused,” said AEDC.
