It surpasses Misiones and Chaco, which had no execution during this year. National public works is the sector where the government of President Javier Milei applied the most adjustments.
An analysis of the national budget executed by the provinces in public works places Corrientes at 39.7%. It surpasses Misiones, which reached 10.5%, and Chaco, which did not have any execution of national funds in works assigned by the federal administration.
This year, President Javier Milei implemented the largest adjustment to public works in the entire country. Public works are at a standstill and the outlook for 2025 will not change much.
Among the districts governed by what was known as the Juntos por el Cambio alliance, the districts of San Luis 66.3%; Corrientes 39.7%; are those that executed the largest national budget for public works this year.
Córdoba leads the measurement with 129% above the province of Buenos Aires, which accounted for 82% of the national budget execution in public works for 2024.
The near future does not seem to offer a panorama of improvements in spending on public works. In the 2025 Budget, which was presented to Congress, it is estimated that capital expenditure will amount to 4,277 billion pesos. This would represent a real growth of 6.8% if inflation is discounted. However, this nominal increase contrasts with the general trend observed since the beginning of the current administration, which shows a slowdown in public investment.
The 2025 budget includes a nominal increase in allocations for National Roads of 68%, which would bring the total to more than 1 trillion pesos. Nearly three-quarters of these funds will be allocated to road construction and maintenance. In addition, the National Water and Sanitation Works Agency will receive a 63% increase, which will raise its allocations to 108 billion pesos.
This fiscal adjustment scenario, in which public works and pensions play a crucial role, is part of the governments strategy to achieve fiscal balance, but it also reflects the difficult situation facing the provinces and the construction sector. The future of infrastructure projects in the country will depend on the provinces ability to assume these commitments and on the Executives willingness to guarantee the necessary financing to avoid further aggravating the infrastructure deficit. |
