Work Detail |
Kochi Water Metro (KWML) is set to expand its services with the trial run of two additional electric hybrid boats, with the official launch expected soon. These new boats are likely to operate on the Mattancherry and Willingdon Island routes, which are slated to open shortly.
Initially, KWML had planned to launch the Mattancherry-High Court Terminal service via Willingdon Island by December as a New Year gift for commuters. However, sources have confirmed that the terminals commissioning will now occur in January or February, with some structural work and pontoon installations still pending at both the Mattancherry and Willingdon Island terminals.
The fleet expansion includes the 17th boat delivered by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), adding to the current fleet of 16 boats across five routes, including the recently opened High Court-Fort Kochi route.
KWML CEO Sajan P. John mentioned that the frequency of services will be adjusted based on demand, with efforts underway to reduce queues at terminals during peak hours. The frequency on the Fort Kochi route has already been increased to 15 minutes, down from 25-30 minutes previously, with plans to add unscheduled services during heavy rush periods, particularly on weekends and holidays.
However, KWML has not yet made a decision on increasing the frequency on the South Chittur-High Court route, which currently operates only four services. |
