Work Detail A US$1.3bn healthcare campus has broken ground on the shores of Hudson Bay in Canada. The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority redevelopment will provide remote and isolated communities in northern Ontario with a range of medical services. The project in the town of Moosonee includes an acute care hospital, a 24-hour emergency department, a 32-bed Elder Care Lodge, mental health and addictions treatment facilities, staff residences and a hostel for patients and visitors. In the future, an ambulatory care centre will be added in Moose Factory. The fixed-price design-and-build scheme is being carried out by the Pomerleau Healthcare Partners consortium, which is made up of Quebecois contractor Pomerleau with Kasian Architects Ontario and Bertrand Wheeler Architecture. A majority of the campus’ future patients will belong to the Cree Nation, and the orientation of the hospital will align with the cardinal directions of the Cree Medicine Wheel. In particular, the hospital’s circular front entry pavilion will face east. The design also reflects the four sacred medicines: tobacco, cedar, sage and sweetgrass. These shape the overall layout and help with wayfinding inside the building. The lobby will be based around a traditional healing space, including a two-storey centrepiece. The project is being delivered using the “Progressive Public-Private Partnership Design Build Finance Model”, which relies on a high level of collaboration between all parties to meet specifications at the lowest possible cost. The design of the project began in December 2022. Site clearing is in progress and the project is expected to complete in 2030.
