Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 25 locations across the city to install electric vehicle (EV) charging points for city buses, autorickshaws, and personal vehicles. At least 10 of these charging stations are expected to be operational before the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, scheduled for January 8-10, with the remaining facilities to be completed in phases. Transport Commissioner Amitav Thakur shared that the new charging points will bring the total number of EV charging stations in the state to 100, aiming to boost EV adoption and promote eco-friendly travel options in the city. These stations will play a key role in facilitating EV travel, particularly for buses and autos, he said. Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT), which operates public transport in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, currently runs 50 electric buses and battery-operated autorickshaws for last-mile connectivity. CRUT is also planning to procure additional EV buses and support the expansion of e-rickshaws for various services, including municipal waste collection. Ahead of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, the city is making significant efforts to present itself as a modern, eco-conscious destination. Officials highlighted that Bhubaneswar’s transformation into a smart city since being named the countrys top smart city in 2016 has seen advancements in public transport, green initiatives, and the development of accessible infrastructure. These efforts include pollution control measures, increased green cover, and the installation of e-toilets to improve public amenities. |
