The Chilean Production Development Corporation (Corfo) is allocating US$41.8 million for initiatives focused on battery reuse and sustainable mining, which will be developed mainly in the Biobío, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Metropolitan regions.
Within the framework of the first call for proposals “R&D Challenges”, announced last February , the Chilean Production Development Corporation (Corfo) has determined the award of seven projects focused on lithium, with battery reuse and sustainable mining, which will be developed mainly in the regions of Biobío, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Metropolitana, to which a total of 41.8 million dollars will be allocated.
According to information from Corfo itself, the funds come from contributions committed by the companies SQM Salar and Albemarle in the contracts for the exploitation of lithium in the Corporations mining properties in the Salar de Atacama.
The seven projects awarded are as follows:
Development of new technological solutions for the production of metallic lithium in Chile, by the University of Concepción, with an R&D contribution of US$5,945,105, in the Biobío and Metropolitan regions.
Advanced reuse of electric vehicle batteries for stationary storage, by AtamosTec, with an R&D contribution of US$3,986,101, in the Antofagasta region.
Reuse of lithium batteries from electric cars and buses, from the Antofagasta Region Scientific and Technological Park Foundation (PCTA), with an R&D contribution of US$3,999,996.
Reuse of lithium batteries from electric vehicles and buses for stationary storage of renewable energy, by CircularTec, with an R&D contribution of US$4,000,000, in the Antofagasta, Tarapacá and Metropolitan regions.
Reuse of lithium batteries from electric vehicles in renewable energy storage systems, from the University of Santiago de Chile (Usach), with an R&D contribution of $4,000,000.
Development of new technological solutions to reduce emissions in the processing of copper concentrates, by the National Center for Mining Technology Pilotage (CNP), with an R&D contribution of US$9,935,135, in the regions of Tarapacá, Antofagasta, Atacama, Metropolitana and OHiggins.
Decarbonization of the mining industry, from the University of Concepción, with an R&D contribution of 10,000,000 dollars, in the Biobío region.
Four of the seven projects are expected to begin operations in early 2025, while the other three could begin within the next six months. |
