The energy company, which is developing the Solar Cell in the Arica and Parinacota region, will have 200 Megapacks, the battery system developed by Tesla for large-scale energy storage projects.
Chilean energy company Colbún and US battery and electric car manufacturer Tesla have announced an agreement that includes the provision of a Megapack battery system for 228 MW of power and 912 MWh of daily energy for the Celda Solar project, located in the commune of Camarones, Arica and Parinacota region.
Megapack is Teslas battery system for large-scale energy storage projects, with units capable of storing more than 3.9 MWh, enough to supply an average of 3,600 homes for one hour, it says.
In a statement, it is explained that this will be Colbúns first large-scale energy storage system and one of the largest in Chile.
The Celda Solar energy storage project will require a total investment of US$260 million, which is expected to generate 200 jobs at its peak construction stage. The development is located on an 8-hectare plot of land granted by the Ministry of National Assets, and it is estimated that this initiative will begin operations in mid-2026, with the capacity to supply energy equivalent to the consumption of 55,480 homes.
The information adds that the design of Celda Solar also considers the construction of the SE Chaca step-up substation and a 3.5 kilometer transmission line to connect with the existing substation, SE Roncacho.
Colbún expects to complete 1,500 MW of solar, wind and storage generation by 2026. Its portfolio includes the Diego de Almagro Sur solar park (230 MW plus 8 MW / 32 MWh of batteries) ; the recently acquired San Juan and Totoral wind farms (239 MW); the Horizonte wind project (816 MW), about to come into operation, and the aforementioned Solar Cell (228 MW). |
