Distributed generation in Ecuador reaches 60.21 MW installed, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines based on information provided by the electricity distribution companies.
This is a power that includes more than 1,290 systems whose main source of generation is photovoltaic.
According to reports, the power is distributed by electric distribution companies as follows: CNEL EP, 31.35 MW; Eléctrica Quito, 18.33 MW; Emelnorte, 2.5 MW; Eléctrica Ambato, 3.2 MW; Eléctrica Cotopaxi, 2.97 MW; other distributors, 1.86 MW.
The Ministry explains that the projects for the operation of a “Distributed Generation System for Self-Consumption (SGDA)” are governed by ARCONEL Regulation No. 005/24, issued by the Electricity Regulation and Control Agency.
This regulation establishes “the bases for the installation, connection, operation and maintenance of electrical generation equipment, in addition to regulating the measurement and billing of energy for consumers with self-generation systems.”
To obtain the certification that enables these generation systems for self-consumption, users must comply with a series of requirements established in Regulation 005/24.
Companies or citizens with photovoltaic systems can request bidirectional meters from energy distributors. The requirements for applying can be found here .
It should be remembered that the country is immersed in a serious energy crisis that has already lasted for months in the country, with officially decreed night blackouts to reduce consumption. In this context, the National Assembly of Ecuador approved last October the Organic Law Project to Promote Private Initiative in Energy Generation , promoted by the Government and described as urgent in economic matters. Its aim is to stimulate the implementation of renewable energy generation solutions and also promote private investment in the energy sector.
According to IRENA data, by 2023, Ecuador had a total installed electrical capacity of 8,901 MW, with an energy matrix mostly dominated by hydroelectric generation (5,430 MW), a large contribution from fossil fuels (2,062 MW) and a meager renewable presence, both photovoltaic (25 MW) and wind (66 MW), although with moderate bioenergy (153 MW). |
