Work Detail |
Envision Energy has been chosen by an EDF-led consortium to supply batteries for the 257-MW/1,028-MWh Oasis 1 energy storage cluster in South Africa. This ambitious project, located in the Northern Cape Province, is set to become the largest battery energy project in the country, with operations expected to begin by late 2026.
The Oasis 1 energy storage system will incorporate both AC (Alternating Current) and DC (Direct Current) energy storage solutions, designed to enhance energy management efficiency. Envision Energy will provide 5-MWh storage units, in addition to offering a 15-year lifecycle operation and maintenance service, ensuring the long-term reliability of the installation.
The project aims to bolster South Africa’s renewable energy capacity while improving energy security and grid stability. In a notable community-focused initiative, the project will provide local communities with a 5% ownership stake through a Community Trust, allowing them to directly benefit from the energy storage development.
The EDF-led consortium, which includes Mulilo Energy Holdings and other partners, achieved financial closure for the project in November 2024. Once operational, Oasis 1 will play a critical role in South Africa’s energy transition, supporting the country’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance the use of renewable energy sources.
Key features of the Oasis 1 energy project include:
Large Capacity: 257 MW of generation capacity paired with 1,028 MWh of energy storage, making it the largest energy storage project in South Africa.
Advanced Technology: The integration of both AC and DC energy storage systems for improved efficiency.
Lifecycle Maintenance: Envision Energy will provide 15 years of operation and maintenance services for the project’s storage units.
Strategic Location: The Northern Cape Province, rich in renewable energy resources like wind and solar, serves as the ideal site for the project.
In terms of community impact, the Oasis 1 project will:
Provide local communities with a 5% ownership stake through the Community Trust.
Create job opportunities during construction and throughout the project’s operational phase.
Offer skills development programs, preparing locals for careers in the renewable energy sector.
Contribute to environmental sustainability by supporting the transition to cleaner, renewable energy sources.
The Oasis 1 energy storage project represents a major step forward in South Africa’s efforts to enhance renewable energy integration, improve grid stability, and deliver economic benefits to local communities. |
