Work Detail Low-lying areas near Tuganay River in Barangay Kinamayan, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte are now guaranteed enhanced safety and protection following the construction of flood mitigation structures that aim to alleviate recurring flooding and water overflow in the community. In a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH Region Office XI Director Juby B. Cordon said that the completion of dike and drainage canal structures in Barangay Kinamayan is imperative to manage the lingering effect of flooding that has been causing extensive damage to properties in the area. “Prior to the completion of this project, schools and other public facilities in the community were highly susceptible to flooding due to the low elevation of the riverbank, resulting in rapid deterioration of infrastructures,” added Director Cordon. Implemented by DPWH Davao del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office, the flood mitigation structures involve the construction of reinforced concrete box culverts, including the installation of pipe culverts, earth canals, and other minor drainage structures to ensure heightened safety for residents during severe weather conditions. Completed ahead of schedule, the project was funded under the 2023 Flood Management Program with a total amount of P77.17 million.
