Work Detail Marta Serrano, Spain’s secretary general for land transportation, has blamed children’s television programmes such as Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig for the lack of women taking up construction jobs, because they perpetuate stereotypes of “giant, muscular men” working in those positions. According to The Telegraph, Serrano said her young daughter had been affected: “We are teaching girls that the road sector is not for them and is a man’s thing. It is something that impacts them from a young age and, if they do not have that awareness, it is very difficult for them to choose us in secondary school.” Serrano, a civil engineer and member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, added that 40% of her department were women, when compared to a government average of 54%. Serrano plans to publish a guide on how to tackle the lack of women in the land transportation sector. A ministry spokesperson said: “This guide will be a consultation tool for the technical staff of the public administrations and engineering companies in charge of the design, construction and maintenance of land transport infrastructure.”
