Nama Power and Water Procurement Company today inaugurated Phase 5 of Barka Water Desalination Plant. The project cost approximately RO 52 million.
The plant began commercial operation on 22 June 2024 in the Wilayat of Barka, South Al Batinah Governorate. It is part of a set of government projects aimed at achieving water security amid growing demand for fresh water.The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Abdul Salam bin Mohammed Al Murshidi, Chairman of Oman Investment Authority (OIA), in the presence of officials from the public and private sectors.
In a speech on the occasion, Al Murshidi said that Phase 5 of Barka Desalination Plant lends support to vital infrastructure projects being implemented in the Sultanate of Oman in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040.
The project, a step forward in the national strategies aimed to achieve sustainable development, also embodies the decentralization approach espoused by Oman Investment Authority (OIA) towards the development of governorates, Al Murshidi added.
For his part, Dr. Mansoor Talib Al Hinai, Chairman of the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR), said that Phase 5 of Barka Desalination Plant covers an area of ??38,000 square metres and has a production capacity of 100,000 cubic metres per day.
He stressed that the project constitutes a key pillar in Nama company’s effort to purchase energy and water to support the water sector with modern technologies that contribute to the sustainability of water resources, notably by using reverse osmosis technology to desalinate seawater.
Dr. Mansoor pointed out that the share of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) stood at about 50% of the value of the project, reflecting the company’s efforts to raise the local added value. |
