Site clearance for the greenfield Parandur airport has been granted following the recommendations of the Steering Committee, which includes representatives from several key ministries and organizations, such as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Safety Regulator, according to Murlidhar Mohol, Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
In August 2024, the Government of India approved the site clearance for the airport project, which will be developed by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation Limited (TIDCO) in Parandur, approximately 70 km from Chennai.
The minister addressed a question raised by Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament P Wilson, who inquired about potential safety concerns related to the proximity of water bodies in the area. Prior to granting site clearance, the project proponent was asked to address the comments and observations from stakeholders, including the DGCA and the Airports Authority of India. After reviewing the compliance furnished by TIDCO, the matter was deliberated by the Steering Committee.
The proposed airport will serve as the second major airport near Chennai, with plans for an investment of ?20,000 crore. The facility will feature two runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, an apron, and a cargo terminal, with an annual capacity to handle 10 crore passengers.
Currently, Chennai airport handles around 2.2 crore passengers annually, with expansion works underway to increase its capacity to 3.5 crore passengers over the next seven years.
Additionally, the Ministry of Defence has granted a No Objection for the site clearance. |
