Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), the countrys second-largest car manufacturer, has announced plans to establish approximately 600 public electric vehicle (EV) fast charging stations across India over the next seven years. The expansion will focus on key highways and major cities to meet the growing demand for EV infrastructure.
By the end of 2024, HMIL aims to have over 50 DC fast charging stations operational, including locations along highways, in major cities, and at Hyundai dealerships. The companys existing network has already supported around 50,000 charging sessions, dispensing over 7.30 lakh units of energy to more than 10,000 Hyundai and non-Hyundai EV users.
“The EV market is expected to experience strong growth by 2030. Our studies show that long-distance highway travel remains a challenge for many EV owners due to limited charging infrastructure. To address this, we are expanding fast charger availability on major highways and in key urban areas while investing in the necessary infrastructure,” said Jae Wan Ryu, Function Head – Corporate Planning at HMIL.
HMIL has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to set up 100 EV charging stations across the state by 2027. Ten of these stations are expected to be operational by the end of 2024, providing 24/7 access to all EV users via the myHyundai app.
Currently, three stations are already operational in Chennai and Tiruvannamalai, with seven more set to be launched soon. As of November 2024, HMIL has sold over 4,061 EVs, including the popular Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Hyundai KONA models. |
