Work Detail Dalian-based Rongke Power has completed construction of the 175 MW/700 MWh vanadium flow battery project in China, increasing its global utility-scale project park to over 2 GWh. Rongke Power has announced the completion of the 175 MW/700 MWh Xinhua Ushi energy storage project in northwest Chinas Xinjiang region. The project will help improve grid stability, manage peak loads and integrate renewables by providing support for grid formation, peak load regulation, frequency regulation and renewables integration. Previously, Rongke built the 100 MW/400 MWh Dalian facility, which at the time of commissioning in 2022 was the largest vanadium redox flow project in the world. This facility represents the first phase of the project, which is expected to eventually double in size to 200 MW of capacity and 800 MWh of storage capacity. According to the Dalian-based vanadium redox flow specialist, the latest project has brought its cumulative global fleet to over 2 GWh. “This achievement represents the largest installation capacity in the VFB sector to date,” the company said in a press release on Monday. The Xinhua Ushi represents the largest completed flow battery in the world at this time. However, there are many larger ones on the horizon, such as the 250 MW/1 GWh project in Chabuchar, Xinjiang, by the China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group, or the 200 MW/1 GWh project in Jimusaer, Xinjiang, by the China Three Gorges Corporation. Flow battery energy storage technology is also increasingly being integrated with other scale storage technologies such as lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flywheels and compressed air. For example, the first phase of the Xinhua Wushi 500MW/2GWh lithium iron phosphate-vanadium flow energy storage project was connected to the grid and put into operation on November 8. This project represents the largest hybrid energy storage project of its kind in China and the largest grid-forming vanadium redox flow battery in the world, which will have a capacity of 250MWh/1GWh and will be delivered in the second phase.
