Work Detail The Dutch rail infrastructure manager, ProRail, announced that the plans for the desing development of Rotterdam Stadionpark station will start, to convert the station and adapt it for future transport demand. This new station will be included in the timetable and will be used daily. Trains currently only stop here only during events and matches in De Kuip, (The Tub), the second largest stadium in the Netherlands. The construction of a new city bridge and better public transport connections will ensure shorter travel times and better transfer options which is necessary because thousands of homes are being built in the area around the station. “Homes, work, schools and other facilities will be better and faster accessible. The shorter travel time and a new station mean more opportunities for everyone, because more jobs and training courses will be within reach,” ProRail says. ProRail selected Royal HaskoningDHV and Benthem Crouwel Architects to design the track and the new station. If the freight sidings between the station viaduct and the Varkenoord viaduct disappear, space will be created for a shorter crossing, extra housing and a good connection. With two island platforms with tracks on both sides, more trains will soon be able to stop here at the same time. More trains can then be deployed during events and large numbers of passengers can be better accommodated. “We are pleased that we can now really start exploring solutions. The environment plays an important role in the integration of the access roads and the public transport that will connect to the station. We want to involve stakeholders and residents at an early stage,” Project manager André Hagen said. The station area around the stadium is also being renovated by the municipality of Rotterdam. In addition to the adjustments to the station and the tracks, there will be a connection to public transport and a crossing over the track. This makes the Rotterdam Stadionpark station an important connection between the neighbourhoods on both sides of the track. Students from the Technasium Fortes in Gorinchem will help ProRail with the design for the crossing over the track. The development of the station is needed because in the Oostflank, the area between Prins Alexander and Zuidplein, approximately 30,000 new homes will be added. The construction will coincide with the arrival of a new bridge between IJsselmonde and Kralingen, fast public transport connections and the Rotterdam Stadionpark station, offering better access for south and east areas. When the project is complete, six Sprinter trains per hour will run in both directions with a potential to introduce eight trains per hour.
