Homeowners in Albemarle County might soon see a hike in their real estate taxes. That''s county supervisors want to issue a $35 million bond referendum to pay for upgrades to schools, and today, voters got the chance to weigh in. At the meeting, the board told people that an additional question will appear on the general election ballot in November. It will ask voters whether Albemarle County should issue general obligation bonds. These bonds would fund four major projects that will affect twenty-five out of twenty-six schools in Albemarle County. The projects include renovations to Woodbrook Elementary and to improve science labs in middle and high schools. They also want to complete a county wide project to move administrative offices to the front of school entrances. The overall benefit is catching up our schools in their capital project programs, we have fallen significantly behind in the last eight years since the great recession and the other benefit is 25 out of our 26 schools will get some benefit from this referendum, said Kate Acuff, Albemarle County School Board chair. If voters say yes to the bond referendum, the project then goes to the board of supervisors. The annual real estate tax would go up by about thirty seven dollars, building could begin as soon as summer 2017. These four projects could be completed over a few years depending on the size of the project. |
