The City of Edmonton and Marigold Infrastructure Partners, the contractor building Valley Line West, have achieved a major project milestone by reopening Stony Plain Road between 129 and 139 Street and the new Stony Plain Road bridge over Groat Road.
On November 30, the road and new bridge reopened to vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. The new Stony Plain Road bridge was reconstructed to accommodate LRT tracks in the middle, one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction and a shared-use path.
Work on the Overhead Catenary System (which supplies electricity to the light rail vehicles), permanent streetlights and the utility complex in the area is ongoing. Intermittent lane closures for short periods of time will take place to complete this work. The public will continue to be notified of any construction impacts. Edmonton Transit Service will maintain current detours due to the ongoing work along the corridor.
“Reopening this section of Stony Plain Road marks a significant milestone in the Valley Line West LRT extension to Lewis Farms,” said Brian Latte, director, Valley Line. “This section of road is a major transportation corridor into downtown, and Marigold made good progress in 2024 to reopen the bridge on schedule.”
Valley Line West construction is anticipated to be complete in 2028, followed by an extensive testing and commissioning phase to ensure safety and reliability before the line opens. The duration of the testing and commissioning phase is unknown at this time.
“This isn’t just a project achievement, it’s a significant milestone for the community. We recognize the impact construction has had on area residents and businesses and we’re glad to be able to give them the road back,” said Jonathan Cox, construction manager, Marigold Infrastructure Partners. “We closed the bridge in December 2022 with a commitment to reopen at the end of November 2024 and we’ve fulfilled that commitment.
“As we move into 2025, we’re looking forward to celebrating the completion of other major milestones. We appreciate the patience from Edmontonians while we complete one of the city’s largest infrastructure projects.” |
