The mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, submitted to the Buenos Aires Legislature a bill through which he plans to carry out the works included in the “Urban Connectivity Program: railway crossings at different levels in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires.”
Days before the end of the parliamentary year, the Head of Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, submitted to the Buenos Aires Legislature a bill through which he plans to sign a subsidiary loan agreement to the Loan Contract, entered into between the Argentine Republic and the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), to carry out the works included in the "Urban Connectivity Program: railway crossings at different levels in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires."
In this way, the Executive could take on a debt for a total sum of up to 75 million dollars, with a minimum repayment period of three years.
In the initiatives rationale, Macri explained that "the funds will be used to carry out infrastructure works that contribute to sustainable mobility, the regulation of city traffic and the urban development of environments that tend to improve the quality of public space, vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and public transport" and indicated that "the works contemplate a city without barriers, in order to prioritize and optimize the citys road network, providing faster, safer and more predictable transport, reducing travel times for users and generating a reorganization of traffic, increasing road safety through the new infrastructure."
“The aim is to reduce the risks associated with dangerous intersections of different means of transport, and to this end it is proposed to progressively eliminate level crossings throughout the City, in order to avoid accidents at level crossings at barriers and improve the efficiency of traffic and mobility, generating greater integration and connection, with safer and more orderly traffic, achieving more fluid circulation and a significant reduction in environmental impact,” added Macri.
He also pointed out that “the elimination of barrier crossings and the creation of new crossings will directly benefit local residents, bus users and motorists who currently have to cross barriers on a daily basis, as well as daily train users, who will improve their travel frequency.”
"The works in question will be entrusted to Autopistas Urbanas SA (AUSA) by the Ministry of Infrastructure for their respective implementation, given its proven suitability in the design, supervision and execution of road works. The execution period of the works is 36 months," he said.
