PNN 83960
Work Detail The Government of Manitoba announced it is increasing its funding for the North End Water Pollution Control Centre (NEWPCC) by $30 million this year, which increases the total provincial commitment to $197.4 million toward phase two of the project. “This is one of the largest infrastructure projects in generations,” said Premier Wab Kinew. “In order to build more homes and grow our economy, our government is stepping up to help get this done. We owe it the future generations of Manitobans not only for our economy but to protect Lake Winnipeg.” Phase two of the NEWPCC upgrade project will involve the construction of a new biosolids facility. These improvements will enhance the storage and treatment of biosolids, a nutrient-rich byproduct that can be reused as fertilizer. These upgrades will allow the North End Water Pollution Control Centre to continue converting biosolids from the city’s other two wastewater treatment plants and will support phase three of the NEWPCC. The increased investment this year means the Manitoba government will be providing the City of Winnipeg a total of $46 million toward phase two of the project in the 2024-25 fiscal year, said the premier. To date, the province has committed a total of $294.1 million for phases one and two of the NEWPCC project.
