Work Detail | Wiltshire-based shredded paper manufacturer Shredhouse is launching a new range, made from recycled disposable coffee cup paper. The launch of the shredded paper, designed for the luxury goods packaging market, comes at a time when the recycling of single-use coffee cups much in the news. As a result of many businesses moving towards more sustainable, ethical and ecologically responsible practices, brands are sourcing environmentally-friendly, recyclable and biodegradable raw materials for both their products and their packaging. Jo Stephens, director at Shredhouse said: “Shredhouse take environmental responsibility very seriously and so do our customers. They are increasingly requesting packaging that is eco-friendly.” “The disposal of paper cups from fast-food restaurants and take-away outlets has been hitting the news headlines recently. Millions of cups get used and thrown away and the packaging industry is working extremely hard, through the Paper Cup Manifesto, on the complex issues that need to be addressed to increase the number of cups which can be recycled.” “Shredhouse are always looking for ways to innovate our products and we see recycled paper cup material as an ideal eco-friendly packaging for businesses who want to demonstrate their environmental responsibility. Our coffee cup shred would particularly suit businesses in the food and drink industry.” Shredhouse will showcase the coffee-cup shred at Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London 2016 at Olympia, London on 14 and 15 September (stand E40). Samples will be available to see, touch and take away at the event. The eco-friendly coffee cup shred comes in a caramel shade in either Shredhouse’s 2mm straight shred or 4mm zig-zag shred. The paper is from 50% reclaimed cup fibres and 50% FSC mixed pulp. The paper, which is of high-quality and indistinguishable from paper products made from virgin pulp, is supplied by James Cropper. At the moment, most of the material is postindustrial waste, made up of off-cuts or defective items from disposable cup production. Recycling of post-consumer waste is in its early stages. Collecting used paper cups for recycling has been problematic due to the nature of their use – they’re used on the go and are often taken away from the place of purchase. However, as a signatory to the Paper Cup Manifesto, James Cropper is working closely with organisations across the entire paper cup supply chain to secure workable and sustainable solutions to reclaim the high quality fibre in used paper cups. |
