Work Detail | Getting people back to work and helping their employers at the same time. Those are the goals of the federal Wage Subsidy program. Rochester-based CareerStart says it’s the only staffing agency with access to those funds in upstate New York. “It’s economic stimulus funding that we give back to the employers to encourage them to hire new workers," CareerStart CEO Lindsay McCutchen said. "It helps them expand their business while adding new staff. In addition to that, it helps the economy grow by creating more jobs.” You can see the program in action at Mercury Print Productions in Gates. The 180,000 square foot commercial printing facility makes things like brochures and educational books. Piece by piece the temporary employees are putting together books to help children learn. The subsidy is paying their wages now, but if they do well, Mercury Print can hire them full-time. “It’s great seeing these people coming in, and we’re really giving them and the community a great opportunity to put people to work in Rochester," Mercury Print CEO John Place said. "We see them working, we see if they really stick out. We’ve actually hired 14 people already from CareerStart after they do their three-month stint with Mercury Print.” For employees it’s building economic stability, one page at a time. “Now they’re taxpayers, they get a change to contribute back to the community while enhancing the lives of their families," McCutchen said. "It’s intergenerational. If the children see their mother and father going to work and earning wages, they’re hopefully going to follow the suit.” CareerStart is currently accepting applications to the program. |
