The Urban Development Department (UDD) has given the green light to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for an extensive Rs. 694-crore action plan to repair 389.7 kilometers of arterial and sub-arterial roads in the city. The project, set to begin in January 2025, aims to improve road infrastructure and address long-standing issues with potholes and damaged surfaces.
The repair works will include milling of damaged roads, re-roofing of drains, and installation of NP-3 pipes in areas lacking proper roadside drainage. The project will also involve constructing concrete pavements, installing and leveling curb stones, and improving the flow of water from roads to drains.
To manage the costs, BBMP plans to allocate Rs 300 crore from its 2024-25 budget and Rs 394 crore from the 2025-26 budget. Among the roads to be repaired, 101 kilometers are located in the Mahadevapura zone, with 26% of the total length in the IT corridor. This area will receive the largest allocation of Rs 175 crore. In contrast, the Dasarahalli zone will receive the least funding, with just Rs 20 crore allocated for the repair of 14 kilometers of roads.
BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath noted that many of the roads in need of repair have not been resurfaced in over five years, leading to recurring pothole issues. “These roads have patches where potholes would be filled, only for new ones to appear, which is why resurfacing is necessary,” he explained.
With the approval of the Rs 694-crore action plan, BBMP is set to begin the tendering process by the end of December 2024, with construction work expected to commence in early January 2025. The UDD has mandated that the works be divided into packages of no less than Rs 10 crore, and that all projects comply with the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act, 1999.
In preparation for the 2025-26 budget, BBMP has also started gathering zone-specific requisitions to allocate funds accordingly, allowing better oversight of how money is spent across different areas. Giri Nath emphasized that this approach will help zonal commissioners monitor expenditure and ensure efficient project implementation. |
