Work Detail The Portland Water District has lifted the boil water order for the Casco Bay Islands. Peaks Island, Cushing Island, and Little Diamond Island customers can now use their tap water for all purposes. The boil water order is lifted as of 9/7/2016 at 4:00 a.m. All water tests indicate the water is safe to drink without boiling. Thousands of families and tourists on three islands off of Portland are being told not to drink their water. As of Tuesday night, the water main break causing that problem has been repaired. Three Casco Bay islands remain under a boil order after a water main broke on a fourth island. The Portland Water District says Monday night a water main burst on Great Diamond Island. The Portland Water District says it only impacted a resort on the island. But that main line also supplies water to the islands of Little Diamond, Peaks and Cushing. People on those islands say they started getting boil order warnings early Tuesday morning, telling them to use only boiled or bottled water to brush their teeth or even make ice cubes. Katie Lee runs the only daycare on Peaks Island. She and her staff are keeping a close eye on the children to make sure they only drink the bottled water they bought this morning. We made sure to go down to Hannigan''s and buy a big case of bottled water,” Lee said. “And we did have a parent nice enough to bring us water from their well. Restaurants on the island were closed due to the water issue. This hot dog cart was about the only place to get a meal, where the dogs are boiled in bottled water. Jason Mathieu says even though the Inn on Peaks Island had to close Tuesday, it would have been a disaster had that water main break happened over the weekend when they were hosting two weddings. We''d have to boil all the water,” Mathieu said. “Food preparation would be totally, very difficult to execute a wedding without proper water. Crews worked overnight to repair the water main break and flush the lines to kill any bacteria. Even though the water main break has been fixed, the boil order remains in effect until the water is determined safe to drink. Tests are being done on the water, but those results aren''t expected back until Wednesday.
