Work Detail | The busy intersection of North Main Street and Hamilton Boulevard will be even busier in the coming weeks, as the Town of South Boston embarks on its latest project using Virginia Department of Transportation revenue sharing funds. The northbound lane of that intersection will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Wednesday for approximately two to three weeks, as workers extend the turn lane from North Main Street onto eastbound Hamilton Boulevard toward the convenience center. Also planned is construction of a left-hand turn lane from eastbound Hamilton Boulevard for traffic approaching the convenience center from North Main Street. It’s been a busy year for projects using VDOT revenue-sharing funds, according to South Boston Public Works Director Alan Auld. Contractors have completed line-piping projects in five places, two along Tanglewylde Drive and one each along Beechmont Road, Sutphin Road and Hamilton Boulevard. Earlier this summer, contractors lengthened the turn lane from northbound Halifax Road turning left onto westbound Powell Road, with an accompanying project on Powell Road itself, complete with repaving and reconstruction of the center median on Halifax Road approaching its intersection with North Main Street. An extension of Summit Avenue has been built, a new road with curb and gutter, Auld explained. Extensive storm water work on Linden Place and Greenway Drive, with drainage pipe upsizing and repaving has also taken place, along with repaving and curb and gutter work on Owens Avenue and part of Logan Street. Another very visible storm water project recently completed took place on Lacy Lane, where contractors relocated and upgraded a storm water drainage line and repaved Lacy Lane and its intersection with Halifax Road. The total cost of all projects using VDOT revenue sharing funds is approximately $2.5 million, with VDOT and the town splitting the costs down the middle, Auld said. The recent project in Centerville and the one starting Wednesday at the Hamilton Boulevard-North Main Street intersection have been the most visible for motorists, said Town Manager Tom Raab. The town already uses VDOT lane mileage funds for its road projects, but it has been successful in prioritizing projects for revenue sharing funds, particularly those involving storm water upgrades, Raab added. Safety has been paramount in prioritizing construction, particularly at intersections with the most traffic and the most traffic accidents, he noted.
