The City will publish a call for tenders next Monday to revitalize a 2.2 kilometer stretch of Independencia Avenue.
Considered one of the "escape routes" and the fastest connection to the southwest of the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, Independencia Avenue is positioned as one of the most used natural exits from the City by motorists, heavy traffic and public transport.
Unlike other avenues such as Santa Fe, Corrientes or Avenida de Mayo, which are characterized by having a more friendly environment, to the point of being considered “a stroll”, Independencia is, instead, a “passage” avenue. With a lot of vehicular traffic, but without any of the “attractions” that make it “enjoyable” and with a friendly environment for the neighbors and residents of the area.
To achieve this change, the city government plans to launch a tender next Monday aimed at enhancing a section of this traditional avenue in the city.
The initiative will be developed over 2.2 km and will be carried out in the section between Jujuy and La Plata avenues, which would benefit the neighborhoods of Balvanera, San Cristóbal, Boedo and Almagro.
According to what PERFIL was able to find out, it is estimated that the works will require an investment of around 3 billion pesos, while the start of the works is scheduled for early 2025. It is expected that the works will last ten months and that total closures will not be necessary to carry out these tasks, beyond the affectation of some lanes for their repainting. As occurs with this type of works, the works will be carried out by the company AUSA (Autopistas Urbanas SA).
But what are the works that will be carried out on these 22 blocks? According to information provided by the Lezama Palace, the urban landscape of the corners will be altered with flowerbeds and benches, and 160 pedestrian lights will be installed and more trees, one of the shortcomings of Independencia Avenue. There will be more accessibility and extensions on the sidewalks for gastronomic spaces. In this specific case, for example, some 200 businesses would benefit.
The stops for the six bus lines that circulate along this stretch will be identified, as well as the blue spaces for loading and unloading goods, and the exclusive parking spaces. Sixty waste containers will be relocated and safe crossings will be increased due to the widening of corners.
As is known, the avenues of the City of Buenos Aires are key centers for the development of the economic and social activity of each of the neighborhoods and are, in turn, the support of metropolitan passenger mobility, which implies the diversity of actors and needs.
One of the models taken into account when promoting this measure was the leveling work on the sidewalks of Regimiento de Patricios Avenue, which not only improved accessibility, but also produced a strong commercial boost in that part of the Federal Capital and a 30% increase in the value of the square meter in the area of ??influence.
Due to a drop in consumption, the number of vacant premises in the city of Buenos Aires increased by 23%
The initiative is part of a more ambitious plan that involves other avenues in Buenos Aires that are also considered “through roads,” and is based on the improvements in mobility that are prioritized by the head of the Buenos Aires government, Jorge Macri. Some of the most important avenues have lost their appeal over time, which is compounded by a higher population density and more obstacles to orderly mobility.
“We are working towards a 15-minute city with the aim of improving mobility even more. This type of work helps everyone who travels through the city to get around in less time, thus enriching the quality of life of the people of Buenos Aires. With a focus on road safety and sustainability, we continue to incorporate measures to promote coexistence and order between vehicles and pedestrians,” said Pablo Bereciartua, Minister of Infrastructure of the City.
The Ciudad de la Paz bridge will be open in March.
One of the unfinished works in the City, which affected vehicular traffic, in addition to the residents of Colegiales and Belgrano, such as the Ciudad de la Paz bridge, has a probable opening date.
After being closed since January 2023, everything seems to indicate that the bridge will be open – for the moment only for light traffic – in March 2025, according to the Buenos Aires government.
As you may recall, the bridge, which is located over the tracks of the Mitre Railway, José León Suárez branch, and has a length of 52 meters and is the largest free span in the Federal Capital, was closed to undertake a series of repairs due to wear and tear and the passage of time, but due to disputes between the national government (in the hands of Alberto Fernández) and the municipal Executive (in the hands of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta) the repair work was never undertaken, so the bridge was disabled and the entire area was abandoned and, without the presence of police officers, robberies and traffic complications dominated the scene of the place.
The area became a zone of insecurity and neglect.
After months of evaluation, the City decided to undertake two projects: one will allow the use of light vehicles and will be ready by March of next year.
While the second will consist of the construction of another structure that would replace part of the current bridge. |
