Tata Power Company has announced a strategic partnership with Bhutans Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to develop 5,000 MW of clean energy capacity in the Himalayan nation. The collaboration aims to boost Bhutans renewable energy portfolio, with a focus on hydropower and solar energy.
Under the agreement, Tata Power and DGPC will jointly develop 4,500 MW of hydropower projects, including the 1,125 MW Dorjilung HEP, 740 MW Gongri Reservoir, 1,800 MW Jeri Pumped Storage, and 364 MW Chamkharchhu IV, along with 500 MW of solar power through Tata Power Renewable Energy.
The partnership builds on Tata Powers recent acquisition of a 40% stake in the 600 MW Khorlochhu Hydroelectric Project, an investment of over ?6,900 crore. Tata Power and DGPC have previously collaborated on the 126 MW Dagachhu Hydropower Plant, Bhutan’s first public-private hydropower partnership, and the 1,200 km Tala transmission line connecting Bhutans clean energy to India.
“This collaboration aligns with Bhutans vision of expanding its total energy generation capacity to 25,000 MW by 2040 while diversifying beyond traditional hydropower into solar and geothermal energy,” Tata Power said.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Thimphu in the presence of Bhutan’s Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Energy Minister Lyonpo Gem Tshering, Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, and Indian Ambassador to Bhutan Sudhakar Dalela.
This marks one of the largest clean energy partnerships in South Asia, positioning Bhutan as a regional energy hub while contributing to energy security and sustainable growth. |
