In a pioneering move for the state, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has launched a smart roads project, aimed at transforming the citys infrastructure. The initiative will begin with a 17-kilometer stretch as part of a pilot project, following a detailed drone survey to create a comprehensive development plan.
The project aligns with the state governments "Mission Pothole-Free AP," set for completion by January 1, 2025, under which the VMC is fast-tracking road repairs. However, the smart roads project goes beyond basic repairs, aiming to ease traffic congestion, curb illegal parking, and address various urban mobility challenges.
Unlike traditional road development, where the VMC utilizes general funds and government grants, the smart roads will be developed and maintained through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The plan includes the creation of dedicated parking zones, vending areas for street vendors, and the installation of street furniture. The revenue generated from smart parking, advertising hoardings, and vending zones will be shared between the VMC and the private contractor, ensuring a sustainable income stream for the city.
VMC Commissioner HM Dhyana Chandra emphasized the projects potential to enhance the citys road infrastructure. "Every aspect, including potholes, dividers, footpaths, and underground drainage systems, will be carefully studied before the smart roads are developed. This project will significantly improve the quality of Vijayawada’s roads," he stated. |
