Work Detail The French government has selected twelve candidates to participate in the country’s latest 2.5GW AO9 offshore wind tender. The projects will be located in South Brittany, the Mediterranean Sea, and the South Atlantic. The areas were identified following public discussions conducted between 2021 and 2022. In South Brittany, the project will be a floating wind farm with an installed capacity of between 400MW and 550MW. In the Mediterranean, two floating wind farms will have an installed capacity between 450MW and 550MW each while an offshore wind farm in the South Atlantic will have an installed capacity of between 1GW and 1.25GW. The technology – fixed bottom or floating – for the final wind farm is yet to be determined. According to the French authorities, the candidates were chosen based on their technical and financial capabilities and included several consortiums and several solo players. On the consortium side, the chosen participants are Le Groupement Elicio, Q Energy, and Kansai Electric, Les Eoliennes du Grand Large created by EDF and Maple Power as well as team-ups of Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires, Oxan Energy and Ingka Investments, Skyborn and Octopus, and Plenitude and Qair. The selected solo developers are EnBW Valeco Offshore, Iberdrola, BayWa, Parkwind, RWE, and TotalEnergies. The next move is forming the detailed criteria of the tender and clearly defining the locations where the projects will be built. The tender is launched in the framework of France’s ambition to place offshore wind power at the core of its energy transition strategy.
