Work Detail The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has approved a new initiative to boost renewable energy in Fernando de Noronha. On Friday, November 1st, the MME issued an ordinance allowing Neoenergia Pernambuco to expand the use of solar power and battery storage on the island. This project, called *Noronha Verde*, aims to replace diesel fuel with cleaner energy, targeting up to 85% decarbonization. When achieved, Fernando de Noronha will become the first inhabited island in Latin America to reach this level of sustainability. This initiative is part of Brazil’s larger energy transition effort, focusing on reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting clean energy solutions. It also benefits all Brazilians by lowering costs on energy bills. Currently, diesel power on the island is subsidized through the Fuel Consumption Account (CCC), which is paid by energy consumers nationwide. By switching to renewable energy, these subsidies will decrease, easing financial burdens. The Noronha Verde project, expected to begin operations in early 2027, will involve an investment of approximately R$300 million. It is a collaborative effort between the Federal Government, the State of Pernambuco, Neoenergia Pernambuco, and regulatory bodies like CPRH and ICMBio. Following the ordinance, Neoenergia has 30 days to submit an investment plan for the project. The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, said in a statement,“Fernando de Noronha will be even greener and today we are taking an important step towards this: driving the energy transition in this natural ecological heritage in our country. We have authorized one of the largest centralized renewable energy generation projects, aiming at the decarbonization of the island and the strengthening of renewable sources in the country”, highlighted Minister Alexandre Silveira. Eduardo Capelastegui, CEO of Neoenergia, mentioned, “This project represents a major step forward for the island and for the national electricity sector, as it enables the production of renewable energy in an isolated system such as Fernando de Noronha, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The initiative reinforces Neoenergia’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in pursuit of an energy transition for all. In addition to reducing emissions, the increase in renewable generation allows us to reduce the burden of charges and subsidies imposed on energy generated by fossil fuels and which are paid by all consumers in the country.”
