Valparaiso Community Schools (VCS) has completed the first phase of a district-wide project focused on saving energy, cutting operational costs, and promoting sustainable practices. This initiative is expected to save VCS $7.6 million over the next 12 years, with those savings being reinvested into classrooms and programs that benefit students.
The first phase of the project includes the installation of solar energy systems, energy-efficient LED lighting, and high-performance heating systems. These upgrades are not only reducing utility costs but also creating a better environment for both students and staff.
Dr. Jim McCall, Superintendent of Valparaiso Community Schools, said in a statement, “At Valparaiso Community Schools, we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance our educational environment while being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. This energy savings initiative is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and our dedication to providing the best possible experience for our students and staff. By implementing these advanced technologies, we are not only saving money but also investing in a healthier, more sustainable future for our community.”
Key Features of the Energy Efficiency Project:
a) Solar Energy: VCS has added 500 kWac of solar power through rooftop and carport installations, which lowers costs and reduces reliance on traditional energy sources.
b) LED Lighting: New LED lights have been installed in various district buildings, cutting down on energy use while improving visibility.
c) HVAC Improvements: High-efficiency boilers have been put in place to enhance air quality and maintain a comfortable temperature in classrooms, all while saving energy.
d) Utility Meter Dashboard: A new system allows real-time monitoring of electricity, gas, and water usage, helping VCS make smarter decisions on energy use.
This project was made possible through a Guaranteed Energy Savings Contract (GESC), meaning no additional taxpayer dollars were needed. VCS partnered with Stratelign, an energy advisory firm, to guide the project from its early stages. The district worked with Veregy, a leading energy solutions provider, to carry out the upgrades. Thanks to federal incentives from the Inflation Reduction Act, the district will also receive extra financial benefits, making this project even more cost-effective.
Bob McKinney, Founder and Managing Partner of Stratelign, commented, “At Stratelign, we’re committed to helping schools like Valparaiso Community Schools maximize their energy potential while cultivating a healthier learning environment. This project exemplifies how innovative energy solutions can reduce operational costs and benefit students and staff alike. We’re honored to collaborate with Valparaiso Community Schools and Veregy to create lasting, meaningful change for the community.”
“Through the leadership and vision of VCS, the school district is taking a proactive approach to reducing utility spending in their operations fund. Freeing up these dollars will only support the educational efforts of their students and staff. Veregy is proud of their partnership with the School District and Stratelign to provide a needed and lasting benefit to the community”, also stated Arash Habibi-Soureh, Account Executive at Veregy.
Moreover, VCS’s commitment to sustainability and efficient use of resources is clear, and the district is setting a positive example for other schools. To mark this achievement, VCS will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 23, 2024, at 9:00 AM in the parking lot at 1700 Roosevelt Road, Valparaiso. The event will showcase the solar canopies and provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about the district’s sustainability efforts.
“This project represents more than just financial savings—it is about creating a learning environment that reflects our values of sustainability, responsibility, and forward-thinking. We are excited to see the positive impact it will have on our students and staff, as well as the broader Valparaiso community. This energy savings initiative is an important step in ensuring that our district continues to thrive in a way that is both economically and environmentally responsible,” mentioned Dr. McCall. |
