Work Detail Egypt has taken a significant step toward transforming its renewable energy landscape with the announcement of a 3.2 GW hybrid wind and solar power project in the Suez Governorate. The project, which aims to repower the aging Zafarana wind farm, is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between TAQA Arabia, Voltalia, and the Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy. The MoU, facilitated by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), signals a bold move to integrate wind and solar technologies at one site, making it the nation’s first combined renewable energy plant. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy initiatives. The Zafarana wind farm, located 130 kilometers southeast of Cairo, has been a cornerstone of Egypt’s renewable energy achievements since its establishment two decades ago. However, with its 545 MW wind turbines nearing the end of their operational life, this hybrid project aims to replace and expand capacity, introducing 1.1 GW of wind and 2.1 GW of solar power. Over the next year, comprehensive feasibility studies will assess key factors such as wind patterns, solar irradiation levels, environmental impacts, and bird migration routes. The findings will determine whether the ambitious plan can move forward. If successful, the project will contribute significantly to Egypt’s renewable energy targets, paving the way for increased private sector involvement in transitioning from fossil fuels to clean energy sources. It also highlights Egypt’s growing role as a regional leader in sustainable energy development, leveraging its natural resources to drive economic growth and environmental stewardship.
