Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited and a leader in India’s renewable energy sector, has successfully commissioned the 126 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project. This milestone project, one of the largest floating solar installations in India, represents a significant leap in the country’s renewable energy journey. The project, worth ?596 crore, was awarded to TPREL by NHDC Limited.
Situated in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project delivers clean energy to the Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL). Strategically located between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs, the project overcame complex environmental and logistical challenges, including fluctuating water levels, strong winds, and limited site accessibility, achieving completion in just 26 months.
Equipped with 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules, the project generates 204,580 MWh of electricity annually, offsetting 173,893 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Its advanced engineering includes robust mooring systems, wave breakers, ballast anchors, and adaptive cableways to ensure stability and efficiency. Notably, it features the world’s largest floating inverter platform, covering 260 hectares of water surface—a global benchmark in floating solar technology.
Beyond its carbon reduction benefits, the project also conserves approximately 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually by reducing reservoir evaporation, further contributing to sustainability and resource conservation in the region. Mr. Deepesh Nanda, CEO and Managing Director, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, said, “We are delighted to set a new benchmark with one of the largest floating solar installations in the country, showcasing how innovative engineering can address environmental challenges. This project is a powerful example of how we can harness renewable resources to drive substantial carbon reduction while optimizing the use of our precious land and water resources.”
Mr. Rajeev Jain, Managing Director, NHDC Limited stated, “The commissioning of the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project marks a significant milestone for NHDC Limited and our commitment to sustainable energy solutions. By partnering with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited on this project, we have demonstrated that floating solar technology can provide clean energy while preserving vital water resources. We are excited about the potential this project holds for future renewable energy developments in India.”
The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project sets a global benchmark for floating solar technology, serving as a model for future installations worldwide. By demonstrating how technical innovation can successfully address environmental challenges, it paves the way for sustainable energy solutions and reinforces India’s position as a leader in renewable energy. |
