The machine, developed by AHTECH CRRC Qishuyan Company, is equipped with a large-capacity battery and an onboard hydrogen storage system.
Chilean freight transport company Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia (FCAB), part of the Luksic Group, has unveiled a hydrogen-powered locomotive, the first of its kind in South America.
The locomotive, developed by CRRC Ziyang, was specifically designed “for FCAB’s operational routes and complies with the principles of standardization, modularization, serialization and generalization, ensuring its adaptability and efficiency,” the statement said.
In the first phase, the machine will travel from the FCAB facilities in the city of Antofagasta to the city port and will be used for internal maneuvers.
The locomotive is described as having a total output of 1,000 kW, is equipped with a large-capacity battery and a 35 MPa onboard hydrogen storage system. In addition, it is claimed to have a lightweight design, reducing weight by approximately 30 tonnes compared to current hydrogen locomotives.
FCAB confirms that it will supply green hydrogen in 2024 and is in the final stages of enabling the necessary facilities, as well as training its staff in the maintenance and operation of the machines by its workers.
