The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has received its first six-coach train for the Phase-IV expansion, which arrived in the capital recently. Manufactured by Alstom at its Sricity facility near Chennai, the train was inaugurated on September 23 in the presence of DMRC and Alstom representatives, according to an official statement.
The train is now stationed at DMRC’s Mukundpur depot, where it will undergo rigorous testing and certification as per established protocols. Under the RS-17 contract, a total of 312 metro coaches (52 trains) will be supplied for Phase-IVs priority corridors: Majlis Park to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg, and Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity.
Of the 312 coaches, 234 will serve the extended Pink and Magenta Lines (Majlis Park to Maujpur and Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg), while 78 coaches are allocated for the new Golden Line corridor from Tughlakabad to Aerocity.
These Make in India trains are equipped with state-of-the-art GOA 4 driverless technology, capable of achieving safe speeds of up to 95 kmph and operational speeds of 85 kmph. The initiative aligns with the government’s push for indigenous manufacturing and advanced urban transit systems.
Train Allocations for Phase-IV Expansion:
Magenta Line (Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg): 144 coaches (24 trains)
Pink Line (Mukundpur to Maujpur): 90 coaches (15 trains)
Golden Line (Aerocity to Tughlakabad): 78 coaches (13 trains)
Phase-IV involves the construction of 86 kilometers of new metro lines across five corridors, three of which are under construction. These include Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg, Majlis Park to Maujpur, and Aerocity to Tughlakabad. Two additional corridors—**Lajpat Nagar to Saket-G Block and Indraprastha to Inderlok—**are in pre-tendering stages.
Currently, the Delhi Metro network spans 392.4 kilometers with 288 stations and a fleet of approximately 350 trains. It operates India’s first driverless metro services, initiated on the Magenta Line in December 2020, later extended to the Pink Line in November 2021.
