Work Detail Belgian grid operator Elia announced the results of the nation’s 4th Capacity Remuneration Mechanism (CRM) auction, selecting ENGIE’s 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Kallo. Scheduled to begin a 15-year capacity contract in November 2028, the lithium-ion battery farm will supply 400 MWh of energy for up to four hours—equivalent to the capacity of 80,000 household batteries at 5 kWh. The facility will provide enough electricity to meet the consumption needs of over 48,000 homes, marking a significant step in Belgium’s transition to clean energy. The project also contributes to site remediation of the former Kallo power plant, which was decommissioned in 2011 after operating on natural gas and fuel oil. This new facility strengthens ENGIE’s footprint in European battery storage. The company now holds a portfolio of 17 battery storage projects across Europe—either operational, under construction, or in advanced development stages—totaling 500 MW of capacity in countries including Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Italy, and Germany. These projects are designed to support the security and reliability of Europe’s energy grid. Sébastien Arbola, ENGIE’s Executive Vice President for Flex Gen & Retail, emphasized the critical role of battery storage in supporting Europe’s grid stability as renewable energy sources like wind and solar increase. “This project underscores the value of the Capacity Remuneration Mechanism in advancing battery assets, which are essential for flexibility as renewables grow,” said Arbola. ENGIE currently manages over 2 GW of global battery capacity and is targeting 10 GW by 2030, positioning itself as a key player in the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions.
