Work Detail | Garaga Inc. general manager Sylvain Fecteau hopes a provincial grant will give him a competitive lift in the market. Garaga Inc. is receiving $254,328 from the province’s Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, while Barrie's Jacobs & Thompson Inc. — a company that produces custom foam, adhesive and textile laminates for helmets, automobiles and office furniture — is getting $250,000. The grant will give Garaga the opportunity to expand its line of garage doors by adding three new models, selling throughout North America. “It will help us improve and upgrade on our equipment so we can be more flexible and competitive,” Fecteau said. The provincial money is part of a $2.5 million investment, which includes an equipment press and tool and die machines. “Having a wide offering of products is key, especially for U.S. customers,” he said. “Their needs are different in terms of their taste and what they want to have.” Garaga has been in Barrie for 21 years and already has 37 employees. The plan is to add another 12 full-time positions by March, 2018. “This is an important story of innovation and growth,” Barrie MPP Ann Hoggarth said. “We are pleased to help support these companies’ growth projects that will help create jobs and strengthen our region’s economy. These investments show the province’s commitment to the long-term success of local businesses and the families who live here in Barrie.” The province’s Southwestern Ontario Development Fund covers up to 15 per cent of eligible project costs, with the recipient company funding the remainder from its own resources. Also receiving cash from the fund earlier this summer was Brotech Precision CNC, with $257,000. |
