Transener presented a 10-year roadmap to eliminate bottlenecks that prevent the installation of new generation.
Electric transport has become one of the main bottlenecks in the energy industry, reaching a point of total saturation that does not allow the installation of new generation.
“Today we cannot take advantage of the wind potential of Patagonia and southern Buenos Aires, nor of the solar potential of Cuyo and the NOA. This means that efficient generation cannot meet demand and has to resort to local generation, which is thermal, based on liquid fuels and much more expensive for the system,” said Carlos Borga, technical director of Transener at an event organized by the Universidad Austral.
In this regard, the electric transport company presented a 10-year works plan for 9.8 billion dollars that was agreed with the Ministry of Energy to solve these problems.
Savings of USD 1 billion per year
“By launching these projects today, within three years, these projects could generate dispatch savings that equal the cost of the works. This is a saving of USD 1 billion per year,” said the specialist.
In total, 11,900 km of high-voltage lines are to be built (28% more than the existing lines) that will allow for an expansion of the generating park by 7,870 MW, of which 46% will be renewable energy.
The countrys wind potential is wasted due to the lack of electricity transmission networks.

The most urgent project is called AMBA 1, which requires an investment of 1,090 million dollars to build almost 700 km of lines and a transformer station to add 1,500 MW of generation. “It is the most important project, it has to start now. This station is linked to the Comahue area and the areas of Bahía Blanca. It will allow wind power to reach Greater Buenos Aires,” said Borga.
The big question is financing, which Transener proposes should be a “stamped” system where the cost is transferred to the demand. “The work benefits the entire system and that is why the entire system should pay for it. In the rate that each person pays, an extra charge should be charged to collect money that ends up repaying the work,” he said.
"If we start collecting now, in six months we could raise the money to start the work. Over a three-year period, the cost of the system would increase by 3.4%, which would represent an impact on the tariff of 1.4% and on inflation of 0.2% increase," he added. |
