After nearly two decades of planning, Chhattisgarhs ambitious information technology (IT) project has finally begun to take shape. Initially proposed in 2003, the plan to establish an IT hub in the state gained momentum with the allocation of 450 acres for the project. The government offered a range of incentives, including investment zones, ready-to-occupy buildings, special economic zones, an IT investment region, and an electronic manufacturing cluster in Naya Raipur, the state’s developing capital.
Under the initiative, units set up within designated IT areas were promised an 80% reimbursement of land premiums, contingent on guarantees from the investing companies. However, despite these efforts, the state struggled to attract buyers for the IT hub, with several firms failing to follow through on their commitments after signing memorandums of understanding.
The turning point came last week, when a Hyderabad-based IT company opened its office in Naya Raipur, marking the first operational establishment under the project. The company, specializing in software and app development, has already employed over 1,500 local youths. "This is a significant step forward for our IT hub," said Chhattisgarh’s Finance Minister O P Choudhary.
Choudhary also revealed that negotiations are underway with several major IT companies, and two more firms are expected to open offices in Naya Raipur soon. The state is optimistic that by 2025, it will attract substantial investments in the IT sector, signaling a new era of growth for the region. |
