The MNRE has approved a new scheme for pilot projects focused on the production and utilization of green hydrogen in innovative ways, targeting residential, commercial, and community-based applications. This scheme allows for decentralized and non-traditional uses of green hydrogen, encouraging its expansion into areas not previously covered by the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The primary goal is to support and test new models, technologies, and methods for generating green hydrogen. These include methods like floating solar-based hydrogen production, hydrogen derived from biomass, and green hydrogen generation from wastewater. The scheme also emphasizes exploring the use of green hydrogen as a fuel source for decentralized applications in cooking, heating, off-grid power generation, and even off-road vehicles, specifically on a pilot basis.
One of the central aims is to assess the technical feasibility of green hydrogen for various household, residential, and commercial applications, including city gas services. The pilot projects will also focus on validating the safety and reliability of green hydrogen and its derivatives in new sectors, demonstrating its potential as a sustainable fuel option in local and community settings.
The implementation will follow a set of guidelines outlined by the Ministry, with funding provided under the budget for the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Approved by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and in concurrence with the Integrated Finance Division as of November 8, 2024, this scheme reflects the government’s commitment to exploring diverse pathways for clean hydrogen use in India. |
