India has secured re-election as President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for the 2024-2026 term, reaffirming its leadership in the global solar energy movement. The announcement was made by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi during the 7th General Assembly of the ISA, where he noted that France would continue to serve as Vice-President.
India’s presidency highlights the nation’s commitment to advancing solar adoption worldwide, spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration. Over recent years, India has played a critical role in promoting solar investments, particularly in essential projects like mini-grids and solar-powered healthcare solutions aimed at enhancing renewable energy accessibility.
The Assembly elected eight Vice Presidents from ISA’s four regions. For the Africa region, Ghana and Seychelles will serve as Vice Presidents, supported by Vice-Chairs South Sudan and the Comoros. The Asia-Pacific region appointed Australia and Sri Lanka as Vice Presidents, with the United Arab Emirates and Papua New Guinea as Vice-Chairs. Europe will be represented by Vice Presidents Germany and Italy, along with Vice-Chairs Greece and Norway, while Latin America and the Caribbean will have Grenada and Suriname as Vice Presidents, supported by Jamaica and Haiti as Vice-Chairs.
The ISA also announced Ashish Khanna as the Director General Designate, who will assume office in March 2025 following Ajay Mathur’s tenure.
Among key discussions was ISA’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) Scheme, which provides 10-35% of total solar project costs in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), contingent on securing 90% of project costs. The Assembly further discussed strategies to promote greater involvement of women in ISA initiatives across member countries, underscoring a push for inclusivity in the clean energy sector. |
