Work Detail Worley Chemetics has joined the group of qualified suppliers for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor. GE Vernova’s Nuclear business, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH), has chosen Worley Chemetics to design and fabricate the isolation condenser system for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR). Worley Chemetics has become a part of the BWRX-300 qualified supplier group with a fabrication facility in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. This group is designed to ensure a reliable, cost-effective, and innovative process for the manufacturing and commercialisation of the BWRX-300. Suppliers who meet pre-defined criteria and customer requirements, as well as demonstrate a willingness to invest in BWRX-300 supply chain capabilities are chosen for the group. Worley Chemetics president Andrew Barr said: “We’re delighted to partner with GE Hitachi to help solve the complex challenges of energy transition while expanding nuclear opportunities in Canada. “This partnership builds on Worley Chemetics’ 60-year legacy of delivering sustainable process technologies, our recently acquired ASME nuclear certification and our newly expanded specialised alloy fabrication facility in Ontario.”Ontario Power Generation (OPG), GEH, AtkinsRéalis, and Aecon Construction Group have also signed a contract to construct the first BWRX-300 at OPG’s site in Darlington, Ontatio. The collaboration plans to construct four 300MW units at the site. OPG’s extensive operating experience along with GEH’s nuclear expertise are expected to contribute to the project’s success and influence the energy landscape in other regions. With early site preparation already completed, construction is slated to begin next year, and commercial operation is expected by the end of 2029. The BWRX-300 is a key element of GE Vernova’s strategy for the energy transition. It aims to assist customers in achieving decarbonisation goals while also focusing on reducing construction and operating costs. The design of the BWRX-300 incorporates existing fuel, plant simplifications and proven components, and is based on a reactor design certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). GEH Advanced Nuclear executive vice-president Sean Sexstone said: “The isolation condenser system is a key passive safety feature of the BWRX-300 design and we look forward to collaborating with Worley Chemetics on a manufacturing design that will deliver outstanding safety, quality and performance. “This collaboration aims to strengthen Ontario’s nuclear supply chain and bring economic benefits to the region.” Last month, GE Vernova was awarded a contract to deliver a 9HA.01 gas turbine for a 600MW hydrogen-capable power plant at the Pulau Seraya power station in Singapore.
