Work Detail The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) has partnered with Transition VC, a venture capital fund focused on energy transition, to accelerate the growth of clean energy and decarbonisation startups. The Kerala state government, through KSUM, has invested INR 15 crore in Transition VC, marking a major milestone in the state’s efforts to achieve its sustainability and energy independence goals. The investment aligns with Kerala’s ambitious targets, including becoming a 100% renewable energy-based state by 2040 and achieving net carbon neutrality by 2050. This partnership aims to support both local and national deep-tech energy transition startups by providing financial backing, strategic expertise, and access to Transition VC’s network of experts in clean energy. Kerala has been a leader in promoting renewable energy initiatives and has developed a strong ecosystem to support energy transition startups. The state’s infrastructure includes Maker Village, fablabs, IoT labs, and an MSME cluster, all aimed at fostering innovation in the energy transition space. Additionally, Kerala’s Hydrogen Valley projects, planned for Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, further demonstrate the state’s commitment to green energy, alongside ongoing solar and wind energy projects. Transition VC’s investment strategy includes offsetting 40 million tons of carbon emissions through its investments, which aligns closely with Kerala’s sustainability goals. The collaboration is expected to leverage Kerala’s natural resources, such as its tropical climate and coastline, to explore hydrogen production and boost sectors like drone technologies and marine electrification. Leadership Statements Raiyaan Shingati, Co-founder and Managing Partner of Transition VC, expressed optimism about the partnership, saying, “We are excited and deeply grateful for the Kerala State Government’s trust and investment in Transition VC. This INR 15 crore investment is a significant step towards accelerating the energy transition in Kerala. Together, we aim to create sustainable energy solutions, drive innovation, and pave the way for a cleaner and greener future for the state.” Anoop P. Ambika, CEO of Kerala Startup Mission, also emphasized the importance of the collaboration in achieving the state’s energy independence and sustainability targets: “This partnership will provide essential financial and strategic support to deep-tech energy startups, helping them scale and innovate in the clean energy sector.” A Strategic Platform for Net-Zero Goals The partnership is expected to drive large-scale transformation by helping local industries adopt clean energy practices and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. With strong institutional ties to research hubs and advanced facilities, Kerala is poised to become a model for renewable energy adoption, inspiring similar efforts across India. The long-term vision of the partnership is to create a platform for industries transitioning towards net-zero emissions, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for Kerala and the wider region.
