Ocean Winds, a joint venture between France’s Engie and Portuguese electric utilities company EDP has partnered up with Brazilian power firm Eletrobras to study the development of offshore wind farms in Brazil.
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to combine Ocean Winds’ experience in offshore wind projects, from origination to operation, with the knowledge of Eletrobras, Latin America’s largest power utility.
Ocean Winds, which currently has a portfolio of projects totalling 18.5 GW across eight countries, said it is strategically directing its efforts towards Brazil, due to its potential to meet the growing demand for renewable energy in the long term and to “support the energy transition and generate opportunities for the supply chain and local communities”.
The company has 15 GW registered with Brazil’s environmental regulator IBAMA in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul.
Brazil’s offshore wind energy potential exceeds 1,200GW, with 480GW from fixed foundations, and 748GW from floating foundations, according to a study released by DNV for the World Bank Group earlier this year. |
