Work Detail Gensol Engineering Limited , a prominent player in the renewable energy sector, has joined forces with Matrix Gas & Renewables to develop India’s first and largest Green Steel production facility powered entirely by green hydrogen. This initiative is a major breakthrough in the country’s move toward sustainable steel production and is part of three pilot projects sanctioned under the National Green Hydrogen Mission by MECON in collaboration with the Ministry of Steel (MoS) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The facility will represent a significant leap in green technology for India’s steel sector, using green hydrogen to replace traditional fossil fuels in the production of sponge iron, which will be converted from iron ore using direct reduced iron (DRI) vertical shaft technology. The plant will have a capacity of 50 tons per day (TPD), marking a major step towards decarbonizing the steel industry. The project’s total capital expenditure is estimated at INR 321 crore, with the Government of India providing 50% of the capex as an incentive, highlighting its commitment to promoting clean energy solutions. Matrix Gas & Renewables, Gensol Engineering, the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB (Sweden) will collaborate on the project, overseeing every phase from land acquisition to commissioning. Matrix will lead the entire project lifecycle, covering design, engineering, procurement, logistics, and infrastructure development. Chirag Kotecha, Whole-time Director at Matrix Gas & Renewables Ltd., stated, “We are proud to lead such a transformative project in India’s steel industry. This facility will place us at the forefront of India’s clean energy transition while contributing to the nation’s renewable energy goals.” This green steel facility is expected to enhance India’s industrial capabilities while reinforcing the country’s commitment to sustainable development through the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
