The made-in-Kenya e-bike covered 1,000km in under 18 hours
An African-made electric motorcycle has completed a historic 6,000km solar powered journey from Nairobi, Kenya to Stellenbosch in the heart of the Cape Winelands in South Africa.
Traversing tea farms, hazardous and dusty roads, sometimes in low visibility, stopping to have a kick about with local children, and encountering wildlife, the journey aboard the Roam Air electric motorcycle has proven to be a triumph of African ingenuity.
The expedition began on 29 September and saw the Roam Air travel through Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana before arriving in Stellenbosch yesterday morning (16 October).
The expedition also made its way past Victoria Falls to the Chobe River, where the team camped in close proximity to hippos, while taking in some of the continent’s natural wonders.
SA-Kenya partnership beyond electric motorcycle adventure
The trip was a collaborative effort between Roam, an African electric mobility pioneer company based in Kenya, and Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Faculty of Engineering, with support from partners such as SANEDI, Scatec, Charlie’s Travel and Throttle Pitstop.
Two Roam Airs have been donated to the Electric Mobility Lab at SU to support ongoing research into sustainable transport solutions tailored for Africa.
?Accompanied by two solar-powered support vehicles, the trip coincides with Transport Month in South Africa and tested Roam Air’s drivetrain, portable dual batteries, and solar recharging capabilities under real-world conditions. |
