Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated five Smart City projects in Varanasi on Sunday, focusing on promoting sports and improving the physical and mental well-being of citizens and athletes in the region. The initiatives, which collectively amount to ?227.64 crores, underscore the governments commitment to enhancing infrastructure for sports, recreation, and community development.
Varanasi Sports Complex Phase-2 & 3
Following the recent completion of a multi-level indoor sports complex, PM Modi inaugurated the Phase II and III works of the Varanasi Sports Complex, which were developed at a cost of ?216.29 crores. This state-of-the-art facility features a National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), a hostel for athletes, accommodations for coaches, and various sports fields.
The NCOE is designed to provide training in combat sports, including boxing, fencing, and wrestling, with facilities for Olympic-level shooting training. It also includes a Sports Science Centre dedicated to recovery and rehabilitation. The complex will be operated by the Sports Authority of India and is equipped to accommodate 180 trainees and wardens.
In addition to the NCOE, the complex includes practice facilities for cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, and kabaddi. All buildings are designed as green structures, achieving GRIHA level 3 certification, and the entire complex is accessible for differently-abled individuals.
Townhall Shopping Complex
A new Townhall Shopping Complex, constructed at a cost of ?2.51 crores, was also inaugurated to provide organized facilities for temporary shops near Townhall Park in Maidagin, Varanasi. The complex comprises 58 shops along with essential amenities like drinking water and toilet facilities, aiming to boost business activities in the area and improve traffic flow.
Sports Activity Area & Parking Facilities under Kakarmatta Flyover
A sports activity area and parking facility, developed for ?1.49 crores under the Kakarmatta flyover, features an air-conditioned zone for games such as table tennis, carrom, and chess. This area includes parking for 24 cars and 32 two-wheelers, along with CCTV for public safety and green space development through horticulture.
Beautification and Redevelopment of 20 Parks
The redevelopment of 20 parks in Varanasi, costing ?7.85 crores, includes landscaping, boundary walls, open gyms, children’s play areas, jogging tracks, and art installations. The parks that have been revitalized include those in Awaas Vikas Colony, Naati Imli Park, Mahesh Nagar Colony, Azaad Park, and several others across the city.
